With student enrollment on the decline, institutions are exploring innovative ways to enhance their offerings without incurring significant additional costs. Course-sharing has emerged as a promising solution, but it brings challenges in balancing the needs of students, faculty, administrators, and IT teams. Students seek convenience, faculty require resource accessibility, administrators focus on security and efficiency, and IT departments are interested in all of it and often play a key role in bringing these elements together.

The Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA) and InCommon have collaborated to address these challenges. Together, they’ve engaged 20 institutions and over 30 stakeholders to develop a federated identity solution that simplifies access across learning management systems. This approach aims to remove login barriers and streamline the experience for students—enabling them to register for courses at other institutions without added accounts or IT hurdles.

Many institutions operate in a hybrid state, juggling on-premises identity systems with cloud-based IAM solutions. As the shift toward cloud infrastructure and SaaS services accelerates, institutions making these transitions must weigh greater scalability, flexibility, and integration options with challenges like licensing costs, integration complexity with legacy systems, and vendor dependence. With no one-size-fits-all approach, each institution must navigate its own path forward.

The NET+ AWS program is opening its quarterly Town Hall meeting to the entire community beginning with the Jan. 15 webinar at 11 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. ET. This presentation is for those responsible for enterprise IT, security and compliance, research IT, research computing and data professionals, researchers, and those who support researchers using, collecting, analyzing, and sharing genomic and biomedical research data.

The growth of genomic and biomedical research has led to an exponential increase in the amount of genomic data being generated. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has updated its requirement for responsible management of controlled access human genomic and phenotypic data to align with the NIST SP 800-171 security standard, a comprehensive framework for securing Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

The update takes effect on Jan 25, 2025, and institutions that don’t comply with these requirements could face significant consequences. In this presentation you will learn about how AWS can help institutions build a compliant environment to meet these requirements through its Secure Research Environment, and the resources and support AWS provides for institutions along their compliance journey.
